Car Pollution

No surprised here…

Women exposed to air pollution from freeways and congested roads are much more likely to give birth to premature babies and suffer from preeclampsia, according to a study by University of California scientists published Wednesday.

The findings, based on pregnant women in the Long Beach/Orange County region of Southern California, add to the growing evidence that car and truck exhaust can jeopardize the health of babies while they are in the womb.

Reviewing the birth records of more than 81,000 infants, researchers found that the risk of having a baby born before 30 weeks of gestation increased 128 percent for women who live near the worst traffic-generated air pollution.

In addition, preeclampsia increased 42 percent for women who lived in those areas, according to the study, published online in the scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives. Preclampsia, a serious illness that involves high blood pressure, can endanger the baby and the mother.

The team of scientists from UCLA and University of California, Irvine studied babies born in Long Beach, near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and in adjacent Orange County. Those areas are traversed by several major freeways used by commuters as well as heavy-duty trucks delivering goods to and from the ports.

The infants’ birth records were matched with their addresses and then compared with traffic patterns and estimates of two pollutants — particulates and nitrogen oxides — from vehicles near the mothers’ homes.

The study was unique in that the researchers constructed a database estimating what the pregnant women breathed in their own neighborhoods — within three kilometers, or less than two miles, of their homes. Previous studies have used general air pollution measurements, which is a less accurate estimate of what people are exposed to.

Only traffic-generated emissions were included in the study, not pollutants from factories and other sources.

Fetuses “are in a very sensitive stage of development” that could be vulnerable to the toxic substances inhaled by their mothers, said Jun Wu, an assistant professor of epidemiology at UC Irvine and the study’s lead author.

Other recent studies have linked air pollutants to preterm births and low birth weights. But until now, “no study has associated air pollution with preeclampsia. This is the first one,” Wu said.

Tracey Woodruff, director of University of California, San Francisco’s Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment, said the research offers a relatively “new twist on air pollution,” since most scientists have focused on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

“This is just one more piece of the scientific evidence that air pollution can have effects on adverse pregnancy outcomes,” said Woodruff, who was not involved in the research.

The babies in the study were born between 1997 and 2006 at four hospitals: Long Beach Memorial and three in Orange County — Anaheim Memorial, Orange Coast Memorial in Fountain Valley and Saddleback Memorial in Laguna Hills.

Maria Gugerty, a Long Beach resident, said she always has wondered what might have caused her son, Will, to be born premature, at 31 weeks. Her son was likely one of the preemies reviewed in the study since he was born at Long Beach Memorial in 1997.

“My pregnancy was completely fine, but all of a sudden my water broke. It seemed completely random and the doctors were never able to determine any physical reason for it,” she said. “I was so careful during my pregnancy. No alcohol, no smoking and a good diet. So I’ve always wondered if it was something in the environment, not necessarily air pollution but the environment in general.”

Another Long Beach mother, Susan Taylor, said her doctor thought a gum infection most likely was the cause of her daughter, Maddy, being born early, also at 31 weeks. But, she said, “we did live near a very busy, noisy intersection.”

Like most women, Gugerty and Taylor didn’t know there was a connection between air pollution and pregnancies. But Gugerty said that she “absolutely” worries about the potential health effects of the pollution around her home in Long Beach. Her son, now 12, has asthma.

About half of the babies included in the study were born in Long Beach. Air pollution experts have said that people living in that area faced a variety of increased health risks, including cancer and reduced lung function, due to heavy traffic and other sources of air pollution related to the ports and freeways.

Every year, more than half a million infants are born prematurely in the United States. In the study, 8 percent of the 81,186 babies were preterm, including 1 percent that were “very preterm,” or under 30 weeks of gestation.

The link to air pollution was strongest for the “very preterm” babies, who often weigh less than three pounds and have the greatest risk of serious health problems. The researchers compared women who lived in areas with the most traffic-related pollution with women who lived in areas with the least traffic pollution. Those in the polluted areas were 128 percent more likely to deliver “very preterm” babies.

The risk of less severe preterm babies — those born between 30 and 37 weeks — was about 30 percent higher for women living in the areas with a lot of traffic emissions.

About 3 percent of the study’s pregnant women had preeclampsia, which can result in premature babies. Its causes are unknown, although doctors think it is related to abnormal growth of the placenta.

The new study focused on “an important area of research, since there are a lot of reasons to believe that there is something happening with environmental chemicals and preeclampsia,” Woodruff said. “Women with preeclampsia have high blood pressure, and some air pollutants can increase blood pressure. This is a serious condition, and these women are at risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.”

Scientists are uncertain how air pollutants might trigger premature babies. The chemicals may interfere with placental development, which would impair the nutrients and oxygen delivered to the fetus. Or they could trigger oxidative stress — when cells are overwhelmed and DNA is damaged by reactive compounds in the environment called free radicals.

Wu said it is likely that other pollutants are to blame, not the fine particles and nitrogen oxides. Instead, those two pollutants could be an indicator of other toxic compounds in vehicle exhaust, such as polycyclic aromatic compounds. A recent study of babies in New York City linked those compounds, called PAHs, to preterm and low-weight babies.

Wu said doctors should warn pregnant women about air pollution because “they should be aware of these issues.” While most can’t move to avoid traffic emissions, Wu said they might be able to take precautions, such as reducing their commutes or closing their windows in cars and homes.

But avoiding air pollution is virtually impossible, Woodruff said, so “pregnant women should be aware of the risks and advocate for the kinds of [government] actions that reduce overall exposure to air pollution.”

The authors said a major limitation of their research is that it only looked at where the women lived when their babies were born, not where they lived or worked during their pregnancies, or whether they had long commutes in heavily polluted areas. Still, they said by using neighborhood data, they were probably more accurate in estimating the women’s exposures than past researchers have been.

Beate Ritz, an epidemiology professor at UCLA’s School of Public Health, was the study’s senior author. Her research has focused on using geographic information to map people’s exposure to pollutants and chemicals and search for links to chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s and cancer.

Woodruff said many researchers are starting to use such data, which only has been available in recent years, because it can provide “reasonable estimates of what people are exposed to.”

Those studies are very sad as no parent wants to hear about the word premature birth or birth problems. This is all the more reason everyone needs to go green and promote renewable energy, we have to survive as a human race.

  2. It’s a sad world we live in where we can’t even go outside without fear of inhaling toxic fumes. Most of these pollution developments have surfaced in the past 100 years, not giving out bodies time to evolve and deal with the problem.

Close all your windows is right, Dr. Wu.

  3. thissi sad.. maybe not..

  4. Car pollution is a problem in almost all major cities, especially Los Angeles. As a car lover, I personally cannot wait for the day when we can enjoy our vehicles without feeling guilty about the pollution.

  5. You cannot escape air pollution, not even in your own home. “In 1985 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that toxic chemicals found in the air of almost every American home are three times more likely to cause some type of cancer than outdoor air pollutants”. (Miller 488) The health problems in these buildings are called “sick building syndrome”. “An estimated one-fifth to one-third of all U.S. buildings are now considered “sick”. (Miller 489) The EPA has found that the air in some office buildings is 100 times more polluted than the air outside. Poor ventilation causes about half of the indoor air pollution problems. The rest come from specific sources such as copying machines, electrical and telephone cables, mold and microbe-harboring air conditioning systems and ducts, cleaning fluids, cigarette smoke, carpet, latex caulk and paint, vinyl molding, linoleum tile, and building materials and furniture that emit air pollutants such as formaldehyde. A major indoor air pollutant is radon-222, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the radioactive decay of uranium-238. “According to studies by the EPA and the National Research Council, exposure to radon is second only to smoking as a cause of lung cancer”. (Miller 489) Radon enters through pores and cracks in concrete when indoor air pressure is less than the pressure of gasses in the soil. Indoor air will be healthier than outdoor air if you use an energy recovery ventilator to provide a consistent supply of fresh filtered air and then seal air leaks in the shell of your home .

  6. priya from human race

well we can’t stop such type of pollution now and only feul scarcity will stop it but its too late to do this and not only woman and babies are affected by this, everyone is affected by this.

  7. James from cheap car insurance

Smog can irritate your eyes, nose and throat. Or it can worsen existing heart and lung problems. In exceptional cases it may result in an early death.

  8. mary from maternity apparel

This is definitely a big concern that we must resolve. More and more people’s lives are at stake because of car pollution.

  9. Steve from jersey car hire

I guess we have to be positive and look forward, there were many times in history when we faced similar problems. A few hundred years ago in London people were dying in massive numbers and no one could work out why, it turned out that it was because sewage was just poured onto the streets. They undertook the biggest engineering challenge ever undertaken and built the 1st underground sewage system in the modern world (that still runs today) and solved the problem.

  10. Sally from SR22 Insurance

As the effects worsen, we will eventually be forced to develop technologies to clean the pollution we have created.

  11. adi from acne treatment

car pollution no…. please save the world!

  12. Amy

I am not really a car user. I mostly go around city with my bicycle and I am proud of it. :)

  13. I must say there is a lot to hate about city life. I know coming from a rural town growing up, air pollution was lost on me. Now that I’ve gone through college and am now a working man, I can really see how pollution can effect everyone in it’s range.

  14. These types of studies are very sad. As a parent, no one wants to hear about premature birth or birth defects. This is all the more reason why people need to take going “green” more seriously.

  15. Belonging to a city like Delhi and commuting between home and office a women has little choice but to face the perils of being exposed to vehicular pollution. While you can not change the way world works but you can be proactive to safeguard yourself by not travelling during critical phases of pregnancy.

  16. I enjoyed reading this post about Car Pollution | Eco Friendly and Going Green. Really interesting. I will come back to visit this blog again.

  17. This is really an alarming situation and needs special attention. If we look at the past, we can see that this car pollution and in fact every kind of pollution is increasing day by day and threat to human life is also getting higher and higher. This type of pollution doesn’t result only in premature births but can also cause physical and psychological abnormalities in the new born babies as this is evident from the research conducted on various high traffic countries.

  18. charles from rome hotels

pollution is becoming a concerning issue for us(human beings) & serious steps needs to be taken before this is too late.

  19. This is really an alarming situation and not only governments, but also the public need to be serious about it and fight collectively against this pollution. If the situation continues to worsen, I can even take a bold step of going on my old bicycle to my office instead of car. If we don’t think for our environment, who else is going to think for it?

  20. Vik from DUI lawyers GA

I enjoy riding my bike instead of driving my car. The problem is, I could be a victim of carbon monoxide poisoning. Great post.

  21. abbasi from goatraveltips.com

You have highlighted a very serious issue and this is a high time that we start thinking for betterment of not only our lives but also for our coming generations. Unfortunately, by adding more into already polluted environment, we are doing cruelty with those innocent babies who have even not born yet. I support the idea given by above commenter that we should opt for bicycles to avoid pollution caused by cars.

  22. well the conditions nowadays…one person cannot avoid air pollution even at homes…before blaming anyone…we must look to ourselves and think what we can actually do to prevent pollution…individual steps can only help reducing such a menace

  23. That’s a good article about Car Pollution | Eco Friendly and Going Green. Thanks for the info.

  24. I initially ran across this blog post while I was browsing for cancer information for an article I’m writing. I had no idea, truthfully, that there were so many health problems out there that people are struggling with! Thank you for the good quality information.

  25. I wonder if there any other solution for air pollution? I lived at suburb area and there’s no escape from air and noise pollution. Anyway. thank you for a such information on our environment.

  26. I think the BP oil spill is going to be the initial push that causes us to clean up our act. Once we get rid of the need for oil, it should be easier from there.

  27. I think it all comes back to oil at some point. If we free ourselves from oil, we solve a multitude of problems.

  28. Derrick from Demon Costumes

Car’s are doing a lot of harm to not only people but also the environment. The sooner we can find another more health-friendly sustainable way to fuel them the better.

  29. james from builders merchants

This is a little bit worrying, but not that surprising. I don’t think most of us even think about what women breathing in when we’re trying to create and grow a healthy baby. It’s not easy to find a solution though, we can’t all move to the country when our wives or girlfriends are pregnant.

  30. Yes. La Is one of the most polluted cities in the country. Do you know its nearly impossible to take the cities auto transportation around there?

  31. Jill from Hannibal Costume

Something is gonna have to give in the new decade because pollution is becoming a real problem. I live in what was once a quite town, its now dominated by the forestry industry which means there are hundreds of trucks coming in and out every day…thats gotta be going something bad to the climate…

  32. I think that the massive oil spill we’ve just seen happen in the USA will help get the country moving in the right direction towards a greener future…if this doesn’t, i don’t know what disaster will…

  33. nandita from Best School in Dwarka

Every kind of pollution is bad for health.Car pollution is bad for our health also day by day it is increasing environmental pollution, use best oil to avoid the problem.

  34. Danielo from Solar Power House

Very insightful article, I really enjoyed reading it. All the success tips that you mentioned in this post regarding pollution prevention are very useful. Thanks for this eco-friendly info.

  35. jessica from offices serviced

I think the sooner we get told the truth about what the environment is doing to us, the sooner people will start to change their ways. It will take for society as a whole to make the decision to change before we can stop worrying about women and everyone else breathing in too much of the polluted air we all breate on a daily basis.

  36. Pollution is becoming a major problem nowadays. It’s not limited to just manufacturing nations anymore.

  37. Enna from Acne

Environmental pollution is one of the big threat. Due various human activities our environment gets damaged very badly. The result is global warming and climate change. We have almost destroyed natural ecosystem. Consequences are tsunami, hurricane etc. Every pollution has it’s negative impact on human beings and also on environment. We should move towards natural resources which are renewable and less polluted. Also go through sustainable development principle to save earth for future generation. There are many ways to reduce pollution level, the only thing is AWARENESS among people.

  38. Claire from Anti Aging

Due to haphazard usage of natural resources and verious human activities our environment gets polluted very badly. Now we all are suffering a global threat and that is global warming. To reduce pollution level we should use maximum natural resources which are renewable and less polluted than others. We should use eco-friendly products.
